<text>The meadow grass has not been mown and the headland’s overgrown
And from the woods of Gurteencrin the pheasant cock has lately flown.
The soft red apples lie despoiled, on my mother’s orchard ground,
And Autumn’s sun, its short day done, casts shadows all around.

The old folk tend the pastures now for the young men have all gone
To fight with grief for their belief, ‘twas a bitter feud and long;
My brother, with his Thompson gun, faced me across the moor
And against God’s will, I shot to kill, my sorrow will endure.

The crossroads where the dancing feet sent echoes down the lane
Are empty now, and many a brow is creased with grief and pain.
Oh, who will cross the wide divide, and take my brother’s hand?
Oh, who was with him when he died near Slaney’s shifting sand?

How can we heal the broken rifts that separate us now,
For friend fought friend until the end, can we smile again, and how
Can hate and fear of yesteryear diminish in our minds?
Oh, the Civil War was a cruel war to break the ties that bind.

But the ash tree lives, and its seedlings give a hope to boy and man,
And the GAA once more held sway in the fields where the hurlers ran;
And the verdant spring a hope did bring, and the fields were tilled again,
And the carefree sounds from the sporting grounds came echoing down the lane.

The Celtic Irish oral tradition of music and song has faced many challenges to its survival, from Penal Laws to changing trends and fashions. At one time mocked and derided, it was always kept alive in the rambling houses and by people who loved their traditions. Now, the ancient culture is growing strong again, not only holding its own but growing in popularity.
The song Óro, Sé Do Bheatha ‘Bhaile was about restoration of freedom and culture; it seems appropriate to match these words with the old melody.

That fell before the Saxon guns.

                          CHORUS
And hallowed ground this grave it be
Where once there grew three mighty trees
Planted there for remembrance sake
For the sons that fell in ninety-eight.

In Carlow town that fateful morn
The men assembled at the dawn
And marched as one through Carlow's streets
To fight and set their country free.
But their daring plan had been revealed
And the foe, they had themselves concealed.
And as the men marched bravely on
The order rang, the trap was sprung.
'Twas the Cork militia began the slaughter
Caused by Yellow Jim the traitor
For he sold the lives of those brave men
And the Judas coin his only gain.

The yeomen set the town alight
And murdered all who dare take flight,
No quarter give the Croppy Boy
We'll kill them all the Saxon cried.
And when that terrible time had passed
The dead collected and on carts were cast
And brought across the bridge at Graigue
And tossed into this lonely grave.
Men and boys, six hundred all,
In that dreadful time did fall.
Their lives they gave for God and Land,
Their resting place a pit of sand.

Buachaill Óg, you are my pride,
Strong in limb and swift in mind;
You are the minder of our blood:
Grow wise and brave, be kind, be good.

Find a wife, respect her well,
Avoid the loud and gaudy girls;

Grandchildren also bring those gifts of joy, pride and hope to grandparents. Having experi-enced what’s important in life, grandparents wish fulfillment and contentment for their grandchildren. This happiness can be found through caring and fulfilling relationships, something all humans need and that grandparents wish for their grandchildren.

                <text>The sky was grey that morning o'er the town of Corofin
For twenty orphan Irish girls a journey did begin:
From the workhouse they were taken upon a horse-drawn car,
The first leg of a journey to the port of Hobart.

For some the journey was to change their lives for evermore
And free them from the workhouse and the hardships they endured;
But, alas for some of these a different story tell;
For them this journey it became another living hell.

They sailed away from Ireland upon that July morn
And none would ever see again the place where they were born,
On board the ship Calcutta with one hundred other souls
Down south to Van Diemen's Land that's where their story goes.

The journey started with a gift of a strong box made of wood
With their name engraved upon the lid to store their earthly goods,
Each girl was given six new shifts, two petticoats and two gowns,
Two pairs of shoes and stockings, and a lock to keep them sound.

The voyage there took four long months through storms and heavy swells,
The girls were sick and frightened but all arrived quite well;
What lay ahead for these young girls was very carefully planned
For Lord Grey had chosen these young girls to populate the land.

They were taken to the workhouse when they landed at the pier
But the locals did not want the girls, at the Irish they did sneer,
They thought the girls inferior and the cause of much disdain
And tried to force the authorities to send them back again.

But the girls were there and there to stay and work was found for most,
But for a few of these young girls, they would pay a terrible cost:
They were married off to farmers and convicts at a price
And they used the girls and abused the girls and sold them into vice.

Now what became of these twenty girls the history books don't say
But they tell us that four thousand girls were shipped abroad this way;
They left behind no loved ones dear to ponder on their fate,
Taken from their homeland to populate a state.

This stain upon our history can not be left untold
And their names must be recorded on a page of history's scroll
For Ireland must remember these poor young orphan girls,
Shipped out to foreign colonies on the orders of an earl.
