For a brave young lad is gone.
The O’Toole’s home is lonely now,
That once was bright and gay.

His mother’s heart is broke
For the loss of a darling son,
And the father he’s bent with grief,
Likewise his brother Tom.

No more they’ll hear his merry laugh
Or kiss his manly brow.
They may call for him, but it’s all in vain,
He cannot hear them now.

They didn’t know what pain he felt,
Nor did they see him die,
They were not allowed to ease that sigh
To say a last goodbye.

His life was short, we must allow,
But he did obey the call.
O God, so good and merciful
Have mercy on us all.

Hundreds were at his funeral
It was a glorious scene:
The coffin wrapped in Erin’s flag,
The yellow, white and green.

At Craneran’s lonely grave yard
His body was laid low:
No more his parents or his friends
A happy hour will know.

His grave with wreaths was covered
From friends and comrades true
And it was a fitting tribute
For a lad so good and true.

The last post was sounded,
Full tributes for to pay,
And it’s there we laid him down to rest
Until the judgement day.

He was a brave young soldier lad
‘Tis for Ireland’s cause he died
And his comrade Miley Carroll
As they both fought side by side.

Now Christ who died for love of men
Have mercy on their souls
May Jim Toole’s name in history shine
Upon the martyr’s roll.

I hear no more the lonesome cry
Of the curlew’s haunting call
In the quiet of dark starlight sky sky
Somewhere above my hall.

CHORUS
She’s fallen victim, with her kind,
To mankind’s greed for MORE.
When all is gone, it’s then we’ll find
ENOUGH is more than MORE.

Where once she called out to her mate,
In bogs by Barrow’s shore,
The empty sky is now her fate;
The bogs are there no more.

CHORUS

The bogs she shared with cock and teal
Are drained to make more crops;
Now there's only one great field:
No cover, gorse, or copse.

CHORUS

The mountain marsh where once she roamed
With woodcock, snipe and hare
Now grows only Pine tree groves.
Dry ground beneath is bare.

CHORUS

We've taken much of Flora now
From Nature's treasure trove:
The Fauna soon will follow now,
Then we'll be next to go.

To our kind's greed for more;

Curse and swear Lord Kildare
Fiach will do what Fiach will dare
Now Fitzwilliam, have a care
Fallen is your star, low
Up with Halbert, on with sword
On we'll go for by the Lord
Fiach MacHugh has given the word
Follow me up to Carlow

O see the swords of Glen Imayle, flashing o'er the English Pale
See all the children of the Gael, beneath O’Byrne’s banners
Rooster of the fighting stock, would you let the Saxon cock
Crow out upon an Irish rock, fly up and teach him manners

[Chorus]

From Tassagart to Cluain Mhór there flows the stream of Saxon gore
O, great is Rory Óg O’More, for sending loons to Hades
For White is sick and Grey has fled and now for black Fitzwilliam's head
We'll send it over dripping red, to Liza and her ladies

                <text>B'as Cluain Mhór in oirthear Chontae Cheatharlach d'athair P.J. McCall. Scríobh PJ go leor amhrán ó thraidisiún streachailt na hÉireann ar son na saoirse ó riail choilíneach. Tá sé seo ar cheann de na cinn is cáiliúla. Déanann an t-amhrán ceiliúradh ar bhua Fhiach Mac Hugh O'Byrne ar arm Sasanach i nGleann an Mhuirire sa bhliain 1580. Ba é Ceatharlach lárionad riaracháin Shasana i gceantar dheisceart na Paile, lena n-áirítear Cill Mhantáin anois agus dá bhrí sin bhí sé ina sprioc do na reibiliúnaithe Éireannacha. Ceaptar gurb é séis an amhráin an ceol iarbhír a sheinn píobairí Fiach agus iad ag máirseáil chun cath.

P.J. McCall’s father was from Clonmore in east County Carlow. PJ wrote many songs from the tradition of Ireland’s struggle for freedom from colonial rule. This is one of the most famous. The song celebrates the victory of Fiach Mac Hugh O’Byrne over an English army in Glenmalure in 1580. Carlow was the centre of English administration for the area of the southern Pale, including what is now Wicklow and was therefore a target for the Irish rebels. It is thought the melody for the song was the actual music played by Fiach’s pipers as they marched to battle.</text>

                <text>Theme: Transience of Life's joys, sadnesses and potential.The old song Siun Uio Dhuibhir tells the story of missed opportunity for love. Life passes so quick-ly. Some see it as a few brief moments of joy in a sea of sadness; others see it as a sad time lead-ing to hope for happiness in a distant new life. Whatever the belief, we should seek to make the most of each phase of our life, to seek fulfilment of the innate potential within us.

                <text>LIFE

Farewell to the days of our youth, now long gone bye,
The red sap that pulsed through young limbs now sere and dry;
The hot pulse that throbbed in wild heart and fiery limbs,
Now chilled and faded in time as memory dims.

Lonely and sad are the parents when young must depart,
Leaving the family home and the warmth of the hearth;
Memories of moments, days full of joy and sun;
The brighter the memories, the darker the sorrows run.

Deep is the grief and sorrow when old friends must part,
A dark pall of gloom to pummel and bruise the heart;
The pain and the darkness strangle the joy of life;
Dismal and drear is the feeling, both day and night.

Sad is the heart when lovers must say goodbye;
The wild passion and zest of fresh love long gone bye;
The laughter and glow now lost in a sea of tears;
Lovers no more, just companions in their last years.

So sadness and joy are parts of our human life;
The higher the joy the deeper our grief will lie;
To each phase of life one question remains the key:
Am I content, or, Am I all I might be?
