<text>Location: Carlow west
Seamus remembers life as a collier and some sights of Rossmore, before having to emigrate when the works closed

There’s many a place in Ireland of fame and great renown
And there’s one of them so dear to me quite near to Carlow town.
I’ll love this place forever, it is part of all my core,
It’s the place where I was born and reared on the green hills of Rossmore.

On looking down from these high hills, fine sights there can be seen,
With the Barrow flowing gently among the fields of green;
The Wicklow hills in the distance and Mount Leinster to the fore:
It’s no wonder that my heart did break on leaving sweet Rossmore.

When young I worked in Rossmore mine, I worked there every day
With a pick and shovel colliering the coal, that’s how I earned my pay.
The work was hard and conditions bad, and my bones were oft times sore
But I’ll never forget the friends I made while working in Rossmore.

Then things go bad and the mines closed down, they said there was no coal,
With nothing left for the miners but to sign upon the dole;
So I packed my bags to emigrate like many’s the man before
And I said goodbye to Carlow town and the Green Hills of Rossmore.

Now I’m over here for many’s the year in this great English town,
But the place that I would like to be is high over Carlow town;
And if ever I return again to stand on my father’s floor
I’ll never more be parted from the Green Hills of Rossmore.

Féach ar ‘When Robin Sings’ do’n leagan Béarla.

When Robin sings its fiery breast
Defies wild Winter to try its worst:
In Yuletide storm and icy gale
It says good days will come again.

The Blackbird sings when Springtime’s near
To say warm days are drawing near;
It thrilled great Fionn, it thrills us now
With twilight song upon the bough.

The Cuckoo’s call means Summer’s come
With long, warm days, bright shining sun,
Soft gentle showers, lush, juicy fruit
And crops all sap, full to the root.

Swallows twitter in Autumn dawn
To tell the world they’ll soon be gone;
They seek the sun; we wait for cold,
For frosty fields and growing old.

Red Robin sings all through the year,
Through good and bad it brings good cheer,
It tells us how, on life’s rough slope,
To live with Love, Enough and Hope.
To live with Love, Enough and Hope.

Our ancestors were in tune with the cycles of the year. Now the birds and their songs can be linked to certain times of the year. Some birds, like the robin, sing all year long. We need to take time from our hectic lives to listen, tune in, and link again with Nature.

                    <text>An account of the killing of a rebel boy in 1798. This is another name for the song 'The Croppy Boy'. Cornwall was the captain of the Myshall cavalry and infantry; he was noted as a harsh magistrate.

Early, early last Thursday night
The Myshall cavalry gave me a fright:
In my misfortune and sad downfall
I was prisoner taken by Cornwall.

In his guardhouse there I was tried
And in his parlour my sentence tried’
My sentence passed and passed very low,
Unto Duncannon I was obliged to go.

As I was going up the mountain high
Who would blame me then for to cry?
I looked behind me, then before,
And my tender parents saw and then ne’er saw more.

When my poor parents did hear the news
They followed me with money and clothes;
Five hundred guineas they would lay down
To let me walk upon sweet Irish ground.

They guarded me through Borris town,
The bloody Orangemen did me surround.
The captain told me he’d let me free
If I would bring him one, two or three.
‘I’d rather die or be nailed to a tree
than traitor turn to my country.

In Duncannon ‘twas my lot to die,
And in Duncannon does my body lie
And every one that does pass by prays
’ The Lord have mercy on the Roman boy.’
