<text>In winter dawn in years long gone
Our forefathers adored the sun,
Druids offered gifts to golden Fionn
So crops might grow and male babes come.

Then Patrick came and changed our ways;
Replaced the gods of older days.
He fanned a fire up high on Slane
That showed, for evermore, the Way.

CHORUS
Come to us Lord, this holy night,
And help us all to see the Light,
To find a right and simple life
Free from stress, and strain, and strife.

And ever since on Christmas night
We celebrate that dawn of Light
When God, to guide to what is right,
Sent us His Son, the infant Christ.

CHORUS

But now once more we need God’s help
To save us from the gods of wealth.
We feast and spend to great excess,
Neglecting our poor spirit’s health.

CHORUS

So every year at Christmas time
Let’s celebrate with Bread and Wine
To keep God’s Word all white and bright,
And light the darkness of our night.

But I'll sing you a song of two foreign young men who fought just as brave and as true.
Their deeds were as gallant as any a man that fought through those terrible days
When Ireland's sons and daughters lit the flame to freedom's way.

It was down nat the Dublin GPO on that Easter Monday morn,
Liam Tannam and several volunteers were shoring up for the storm;
They were building up the barricades for the fight. that surely would come
When two foreign seamen arrived at the door saying 'We'll fight with Ireland's sons'.

Now, one young man was from Sweden, the other young man was a Finn
And they landed in Dublin that morning as the battle was about to begin;
They thought that they'd fight for Ireland's cause and help set our country free
And rid the Irish people of British tyranny.

                                                                   CHORUS
So here's to the men, the foreign young men, that gallant young Swede and the Finn;
They gave up a life on the ocean to fight beside Ireland's brave men.

They welcomed in the sailor lads and Tannam gave each man a gun;
The Swede, he gave him a rifle, the Finn got a double-barrel gun;
Makapaltis was the young Finn's name and he'd never fired a shot,
He dropped the gun accidentally and Jim Kenny was shot in the foot.

Well, Plunket, he nearly lost his mind and ordered him back to the rear
To help pack cans with explosives and build up the barricades there;
But the Finn and the Swede they would proved their worth when the fighting did finally begin
And won the admiration of Ireland's great fighting men.

                                                                             CHORUS

For five long days they fought the fight and stood shoulder to shoulder as one
And not one step back did either man take before the Saxon guns
And when the order it finally did come and surrender it would be,
They marched side by side with Irishmen and into captivity.

In Kilmainham Gaol they both were interred to wait upon their fate
And the Swedish consul, it intervened and cut their man a break,
But no one ever came looking for the gallant young fighting Finn
So with Ireland's sons he sailed away and into internment.

When the Roll of Honour is written for all the gallant young men
That fought that time for Ireland's cause let's not forget theFinn
Or the gallant young Swede that took up arms and gave of them their all,
Who stood when Ireland needed men and answered to Her call.

                <text>Irish Liberty
Ye friends of Irish Liberty and sons of Granuaile
Be not afraid of England’s bull, his horns, his head or tail;
He’s but a shadow on the grass reflected from a tree,
So break the branches bare, brave boys, and plant the Liberty.

Eradicate the Saxon root that sucks our native soil
And takes from us the flower and fruit of our forefathers’ toil.
We’ll till the land where on it stands and plant another tree
Whose appellation e’er demands the name of Liberty.

The proud and haughty Rose must fall, our humble Shamrock Green
Must rise triumphant from the thrall and spread his glorious sheen.
The Red flag from our coast cut off, or trodden down must be
While Harp and Shamrock float aloft for Irish Liberty.

Prepare, ye Irish heroes bold and lovers of the Green,
To strike the Anglo foes and pierce them through the spleen;
Boot out the seed of Cromwell’s breed from the centre to the sea.
And never fear my Irish boys but we’ll have Liberty,

We don’t forget our martyred dead, Fitzgerald, Emmet, Tone;
We can’t forget, much later yet, the last brave heroes gone:
Yes, those who in Manchester died upon the gallows tree.
Revenge, my boys, their mothers cried, and seek your Liberty.

We don’t forget our brothers dear, who in prison cells
Are doomed to suffer most severe where nought but hardship dwells.
Condemned by bloody Britain’s laws, imprisoned there to be
For seeking for their rights and cause of Irish Liberty.

But now the day is just at hand, it o’er the billow dawns,
Whose brilliant sun shines o’er our land, its meadows, woods and lawns
To send the wolves and lions to their covert, all to flee,
While Erin’s sons with swords and guns shall gain their Liberty.

With Green flags fluttering from our staffs when Liberty we’ve seen
We’ll write our martyrs’ epitaphs in gold on marble stone
And Tara’s Harp, that silent sleeps, well strung again must be
And we will sing while Britain weeps of Ireland’s Liberty.

Liberty and Freedom once more shall on us smile
For we shall set our country free, our own dear Emerald Isle.
Liberty and Freedom implanted there must be,
So break the branches cut the roots and plant the Liberty.

                <text>The roll is called, Big Jim is gone, his voice we’ll hear no more,
But his name is etched forever on the pages of folklore.
For those who knew this gentle giant, he was an easy friend to love
And on Good Friday evening Jim was called to Heaven above.

As day broke over Myshall the sad news quickly spread
That Jim Nolan he had passed away and a thousand tears were shed.
The supreme storyteller, he was known both far and wide
And Carlow lost a legend the day Jim Nolan died.

Jim was born in October Nineteen Twenty Two,
The year Ireland gained its freedom, with Michael collins and his cfrew.
Now Jim grew up in Myshall and as he reached a certain age
His talents they were plain to see and he was lured on to the stage.

As an actor he was brilliant and his stories they did flow,
He even featured on RTE with Gay Byrne on the Late Late Show.
Jim lived and farmed in Ballinrush the place where he grew up,
There he wrote about the young man who was ‘The real sure sign of a Pup’!

He told us about Binty McGuire, who was tied down when he was dead,
When someone cut the rope at his wake and binty shot up in the bed.
Ah yes, his stories they were magic, they were better than vintage wine
To hear Jim and his sister Bridie declare that they would ‘sign on the dotted line’.

Now, Jim Nolan was a gentleman, we will all agree on that,
With his big broad smile, his walking cane, his pipe and his auld hat.
He could brighten up any story house whether in sunshine or in rain
And, believe me, we will never see the likes of Jim again.

So, Big Jim, we will remember you, as the years go rolling by
For the pleasure that you gave us Jim, your name will never die.
And as we gaze on your beloved Mt. Leinster with its heather, gorse and bush
May you rest in peace forever, Big Jim from Ballinrush.
