The Killeshin hills are beautiful still and the wonderful Plains of Kildare.
But somewhere between there’s a treasure unseen, it’s a place that I think you should know
Where the Barrow flows fine through the waters of time: it’s the glorious County Carlow.

You can travel some day to the weavers’ way in the beautiful, dear Clonegal
See the Slaney cascade by the bridge of Aghade and the gardens at Altamont Hall.
Mount Leinster looks down on sweet Borris town and over the hills to Drumphea.
Go easy and slow now you’re getting to know the glorious County Carlow.

There’s a sleigh that leads all men in Carlow town and the castle beside Milford bridge.
They’re throwing up the rath where the fairy king sat and the malthouse that’s in Leighlinbridge.
Father Murphy looks down on the old granite town with the sun on Mount Wolseley below
But people who know come and say hello to the glorious County Carlow.

We had sporting heroes in ’44 and many champions since then:
Danoli applied through a proud Barrowside, Hardy Eustace won Cheltenham gold.
We were ringing the cheers from the gallant Blackstairs right on down to proud Bagenalstown.
We cheered them to win and we’ll do it again in the glorious county Carlow.

As I went on alone I sat down upon a stone for to gaze on the work of the Lord.

I have travelled all around through city, state and town but no landscape can I portray
Like the mountains and the groves where the clear waters flow: ah but why did I leave you behind?

It was England’s cruel laws, yes it was the very cause and her offspring I do intend to slay.
Oh May I live to see Home Rule and liberty in my dear native land far away.

Her anthems and her songs and her cruel, cruel wrongs they have brought me to my memory full soon.
The green fields that I love and the pathways I have roved by the clear, silvery light of the moon.

By the solitary tale that I oft times did retell as I rowed o’er the billows on the bay,
In dreams I brought to mind all the scenes I left behind in my dear native land far away.

Oh dear and sainted isle I am from thee many a mile; a stranger I wandered from thee,
From my parents and my friends, my love to them I’ll send in hopes that I may yet them see.

And if ever I go home ‘tis no more from thee I’ll roam till my body finds a prison in the clay,
And my bones they will lie low in Saint Mullins down below in my dear native land far away.

<text>Oh, to write a song like any man, that’s what I wish to do,
And to sing about the place I love in words both fine and true,
And let the one who has never seen the beauty of my home
Imagine in his nightly dream the place where I come from.

On Leinster’s mount above the vale are the nine stones standing proud,
A blackbird perched upon a rock his song he sings aloud
Where the tombs of kings and chieftains, they lie many on the land
From Borris to Rathvilly town; they were built by native hand.

Now the Barrow carves her course so wide through gentle rolling hills,
Her water giving life to lands as over rock she spills
Past Leighlinbridge and Muinebheag a-flowing to the sea;
Oh, the beauty of her riverside is a pure delight to me.

From Tinryland, Ballon to Clonegal you will find no better sights
And south to Ballymurphy beneath the Blackstairs heights,
At the abbey of Saint Moling where they bow their heads to pray
As the sun it rises o’er the hills at the dawning of the day.

In Carlow town her castle stands a beacon to her past
Of how a troubled nation has found its way to last.
Though blood was spilled upon her stones and children cried in pain
Now flowers grow among her halls in sweet free Irish rain.

Every child of God they surely love the place where they belong
And every corner of the earth is praised in its own song,
And my song is about the place where I was born and raised
For I love my County Carlow until my dying Days.
