That links with river, lake and sea;
It visits every sacred well
And places where old spirits dwell.

Through wind, on all who hear:

The Summer breezes tease the leaves
And make sweet music through the trees;
They seek the wisdom of the years
From bole and branch, from deep, green leaf.

Across wild mountain, moor and hill;
It gleans the wisdom from the earth
And sings it to the listening hearth.

Fire’s full of mystery:
If only I could glean the gift

                <text>Ó tháinig ár speiceas daonna ar an Domhan den chéad uair, táimid i gcaidreamh siombóiseach leis an Dúlra; bhog ár saol i rithim le rithimí an Dúlra.

Rinne ár sinsear Ceilteacha ceiliúradh ar na ceithre shéasúr, Bealtaine (Samhradh), Lughnasa (Fómhar), Samhain (Geimhreadh) agus Imbolc (Earrach). Nuair a scaip an bandia mór Ceilteach Brid a maintlín glas (Brat Bride) ar fud an domhain, bhí a fhios ag ár sinsear go raibh athfhás, athnuachan agus torthúlacht in aice láimhe. Léirigh an téarma Imbolg, go litriúil 'sa bholg' an dóchas go bhfásfaí arís agus go mbeadh saol nua ann don bhliain atá le teacht.

D'iompaigh an luath-intinn spioradálta ar an Dúlra chun síocháin, suaimhneas intinne agus eagna agus eolas an Dúlra a fháil. Bunaíodh na mainistreacha, sular cuireadh faoi smacht na Róimhe orthu, i suíomhanna tuaithe iargúlta agus rinneadh ionaid eagna agus foghlama de. Is siombail den tsíocháin, den suaimhneas agus den eagna a bhí i dtraidisiún na mainistreach is ea ár Naomh Bríd mór.

Níorbh aon timpiste é go ndearnadh ceiliúradh ar an bandia Ceilteach agus ar an naomh Críostaí ag am Imbolc.

Scríobh an file, fealsamh agus mistéireach Éireannach, John O'Donohue, faoi sheanchainteoir dúchais a chaith a shaol ar bhruach Loch Coiribe. Rinne an fear seo cur síos ar eispéireas ina bhféadfadh sé léargas agus tuiscint iomasach a fháil i suaimhneas agus suaimhneas an dúlra. Thug sé 'Teannalach' ar an eispéireas seo

Since our human species first came onto the Earth we have been in a symbiotic relationship with Nature; our lives moved in rhythm with the rhythms of Nature.

Our Celtic ancestors celebrated the four seasons, Bealtaine (Summer), Lughnasa (Autumn), Samhain (Winter) and Imbolc (Spring). When the great Celtic goddess Brid spread her green mantle (Brat Bride) over the earth, our ancestors knew that regrowth, renewal and fertility were near. The term Imbolg, literally ‘in the belly’ expressed the hope of re-growth and of new life for the coming year.

The early spiritual mind turned to Nature to find peace, tranquility of mind and the wisdom and knowledge of Nature. The monasteries, before being forced under the control of Rome, were founded in remote rural settings and became centers of wisdom and of learning. Our great Saint Brigid (Naomh Brid) is a symbol of the peace, tranquility and wisdom that was the monastic tradition.

It was no accident that the Celtic goddess and the Christian saint were celebrated at the time of Imbolc.

The Irish poet, philosopher and mystic, John O’Donohue, wrote of an old native speaker who lived his life on the shores of Lough Corrib. This man described an experience where in the peace and tranquility of nature he could find intuitive insight and understanding. He called this experience ‘Teannalach’

                <text>‘Tis the dewy hour of sunrise
In the glorious month of May
And the heated mist presages
Summer’s splendour thro’ the day.
Muffled, stealthy in the silence
Sounds the noise of tramping feet:
Men whose sons are free come marching
Up the narrow, gloomy street.

Do they think “What’s now the issue
Of this long-awaited day?”
Oh, the agonised emotions
Of that hour before the tea.
“Do the red-coats know we’re coming?
Are the yeomen still asleep?
All depends upon our silence
And the vigilance they keep”.

But the traitor is before them
And the swords already drawn,
And the peals of musket-thunder
Echo thro’ the reddening dawn.
Vain their rally soon ‘tis over;
In their hundreds, brave they die,
And the cabins where they shelter
Soon in blazing ruins lie.

Talk not of their dismal failure,
Mock not at their courage vain,
For today we reap the harvest
Which they sowed that here were slain.
Tales of causes lost blaze brightest
When the battle’s bravely fought;
Freedom’s jewel’s more precious
When with blood ‘tis dearly bought.
