Caoineadh Do’n Crotach / Lament For The Curlew
Fonn: The Star of the County Down.

Subject

Ní chloisim fós guth an crotach,
Guth draíochta, uaigneach,
Sa spéir réilteach, folamh, ciúin
Os cionn mo theach brónach.

Curfá
Íosportaigh íad, lena cinne
Ag saint an cinne daonna;
An am nach mbeidh Nádúr níos mó
B’fhearr linn sách ná tuille.

San áit a ghlaodh si chun a cháirde
‘Sna portaigh gar do’n Bearbha
Níl ann anois ach spéir tostach,
Na portaigh uile in easpa.

Curfá

Scriosadh gnáthóg an portach
Chun barra breise a fháil;
Anois níl ann ach páirc amháin
Gan follaigh nó garrán.

Curfá

Sa bhogach sliabh, áit fánaíocht
Le creabhar ‘gus naoscach
Níl ann anois ach garrán péin
An talamh faoi ach bán.

Curfá

Tá go leor Fána scriosta ‘nois
Ó stór taisce Nádúr
Is gearr go leanfaidh Fanú iad
Muid féin gan mhoill ‘na ndiaidh.

Curfá
Féach ar ‘Lament For the Curlew’ do’n leagan Béarla.

I hear no more the lonesome cry
Of the curlew’s haunting call
In the quiet of dark starlight sky
Somewhere above my hall.

CHORUS
She’s fallen victim, with her kind,
To mankind’s greed for MORE.
When all is gone, it’s then we’ll find
ENOUGH is more than MORE.

Where once she called out to her mate,
In bogs by Barrow’s shore,
The silent sky is now her fate;
The bogs are there no more.

CHORUS
The bogs she shared with cock and teal
Were drained to make more crops;
Now there’s only one great field:
No cover, gorse, or copse.

CHORUS
The mountain marsh where once she roamed
With woodcock, snipe and hare
Now grows only pine tree groves.
Dry ground beneath is bare.

CHORUS
We’ve cleared out lots of flora now
From Nature’s treasure trove;
The Fauna soon will follow now
Then we’ll be next to go.

CHORUS

Description

Ní thagann sástacht agus comhlíonadh an duine ó shaibhreas ach ó shásamh ár riachtanais dhaonna go léir dár bhfolláine. Tá go leor níos mó ná Níos mó. Ní mór dúinn ár gcaidreamh leis an Dúlra a athnuachan, cumarsáid a dhéanamh (guí) leis an gCruthú; mar a chan John Denver: 'You talk to God and listen to the casual reply'.

In our modern world we have been blinded into believing that ‘the wealthiest man among us is the best’ Human contentment and fulfilment come not from wealth but from satisfying all our human needs for our Wellbeing. Enough is more than More. We need to renew our relationship with Nature, to communicate (pray) with Creation; as John Denver sang: ‘You talk to God and listen to the casual reply’.
